Does my phone support eSIM? How to check in a minute
Updated 2026-09-27
Most phones released since 2019 support eSIM, but not all of them — and a phone also has to be carrier-unlocked to use a travel eSIM. Here is how to check both.
The quickest check: look for an EID
Open your phone's dialler and type *#06#. If the screen shows an EID (a long number) alongside the IMEI, your phone has an eSIM chip.
You can also look in settings: on iPhone go to Settings > General > About and look for EID; on most Android phones go to Settings > About phone and look under SIM status or IMEI information.
iPhone
iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and every newer model support eSIM, including the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). iPhone 14 and newer models sold in the United States are eSIM-only.
Most iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao use two physical SIM slots instead and do not support eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy
The Galaxy S20 and newer S-series phones, the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series, and some newer A-series models support eSIM. Support depends on the model sold in your country, so the *#06# check above is the reliable answer.
Google Pixel
Pixel 3 and every newer Pixel support eSIM, with a few regional exceptions for older models.
Other phones
Many recent phones from Motorola, Xiaomi, OPPO, Huawei and others support eSIM, but it varies by model and region. Use the EID check, or look for an option such as "Add eSIM" or "Download a SIM" in your mobile network settings.
Is your phone unlocked?
A phone that is locked to one carrier can only use that carrier's SIMs, so a travel eSIM will not connect.
- iPhone: go to Settings > General > About. Next to Carrier Lock (or Network Provider Lock) it should say "No SIM restrictions".
- Android: the option varies. Your carrier can tell you, and most will unlock a phone that is paid off.
Tip: Check this before you travel. Unlocking usually has to be requested from your carrier and can take a day or two.
Ready to go?
If your phone passes both checks, pick a plan for your destination and follow our install guide for iPhone or Android.
